Hamilton & Waikato
The diverse Hamilton & Waikato region encompasses New Zealand's fourth largest city, Hamilton, where sophistication meets friendly kiwi lifestyle. The city’s rich cultural mix coupled with a vibrant restaurant and nightlife scene, extensive shopping options and leading arts sector compliment the world-class events and visitor activities on offer.
The Hamilton & Waikato region is one of proud Maori history (home to the current Maori King) and has a strong agricultural heritage that still leads the industry today. In the west of the region, Raglan has one of the longest left hand surf breaks in the world and the subterranean playground of glowworms, black water rafting, abseiling and cave exploration in Waitomo will be a hit with even the most seasoned traveler.
Peter Jackson looked no further than the Waikato region when seeking out the setting for The Shire in his epic adaptation of the JRR Tolkien classic, The Lord of the Rings and having recently been re-built for filming of The Hobbit, visitors can experience movie magic and hear behind the scenes stories of what went on during filming with Hobbiton Movie Set Tours.
The region also offers a range of walking, hiking and biking tracks that showcase the diverse scenery.
The Coromandel is renowned for it’s beauty, an outdoor haven where rugged terrain is contrasted by an idyllic coastline. These natural features provide inspiration for the creative works and unique attractions hidden around each corner and tucked into every bay.
Coromandel is a sparsely populated region with a mountainous landscape. Much of the region is protected as part of the conservation estate, as are many of the coastal campgrounds north of Coromandel Town. It’s no surprise that this is where kiwi’s holiday given the plethora of natural attractions, including the Pinaccles walk, Karangahake Gorge, Hot Water Beach, Cathedral Cove, New Chums Beach and Donut Island all offer unique experiences that have become renowned icons of New Zealand.
Arrive by ferry, car or plane and bunk down in cosy and luxurious lodgings while catching up with locals who love to show you why the Coromandel is good for your soul.
