Palmerston North City is at the cross roads of your lower North Island journey. It’s a 2-3 hour drive from Napier, Wellington, Taupo and New Plymouth. All roads lead to The Square in Palmerston North City - a beautiful inner city park and social hub sprinkled with public art and surrounded by boutique shops and cafes.
For visitors exploring the Manawatu region, there are a series of 'between the highways' touring routes called, The Country Road. Driving The Country Road is equivalent to driving the 'back roads' but with purpose. With map in hand you can telephone ahead to organise a devonshire tea, pop in to see a boutique mill, and know exactly which lane to take to get to the most spectacular viewing point for 50km.
There are four main touring routes on The Country Road:
- Stormy Point Route - A great alternative to traveling SH1 between Taupo and Wellington, with lookout points over ancient river terraces
- Peep-O-Day Route - Aptly named after the Peep-O-Day point, which is the first place in the area to see the morning sun
- Pohangina Valley Route - A vast valley located at the foot of the Ruahine Mountain Range featuring wetlands, small communities, and an abundance of walking tracks
- Iron Gates Experience - A secluded section of northern Manawatu with many natural attractions. Named after the Iron Gates Gorge.
